A flat cemetery marker is usually a rectangular 4" slab of granite that is placed flush in the ground (with or without a concrete surround). It can also refer to a bronze plaque that is attached to a granite base.

Pillow markers are granite markers that are thicker at the back than the front therefore angling the top surface. Since that angle raises it above grade, it is considered by most cemeteries to actually be an upright memorial.
